Rehearsal on the Battleship
Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 07:47AM This is from a year or two ago.
The church I used to work for called and asked if I could come and help with the band for a weekend, because they had a horn section. For whatever reason, I only found out about it right before I was supposed to be there. They were rehearsing on a battleship out in Lake Macatawa, and I got to the dock a little late because Dave, my old accountability partner, was driving around with the headlights out on his pickup truck. The boat was leaving when I got there, and I would had to have jumped across the little gap onto the loading platform, but everyone was acting so important and official that I didn't dare to speak up, and the ship pulled away without me. Then I was ON the battleship, but Dave and I were in his ski boat, and he revved the engine and we slipped off the deck and fell 50 feet into the water and on the way down he shouted, "We'll land okay." And we did, but his engine was wrecked so he put me in a rowboat with Steve and Kristin and their son Josh, except we didn't have any oars. Finally some girls came up behind us and pushed the boat while they were swimming and we coasted up to the battleship and got on. I ran all over the battleship looking for the rehearsal room (battleships are BIG), then when I found it, it turned out they didn't really need me.

Ed, I love this. That's funny, right there, that's funny. The rich tapestry that is the life of a musician is second to none!
You're right about being a musician, but it's soooo hard to explain.
Y'all are freaks. Now singers - we're normal. :-)
